Sicilian Baroque:
Ragusa, Modica, Noto
Many are the features of the island. One of these is the Baroque. A
catastrophic earthquake destroyed almost the entire eastern Sicily at
the end of the 17th-century. The following century a plethora of
buildings saw the light in all
the Sicily. A Sicilian Baroque with a
strong local character and Roman and Spanish influences. These sites are
listed by UNESCO as World Heritage sites.
Produced by the ingenuity of Sicilians, the Baroque artefacts have their
distinctive characteristic especially in local material used for
building. This group of cities have in common the yellow sandstone,
easily workable. The other was the case of the baroque of Catania, where
the lava stone defines local character.
